The blade is made of high-quality Böhler M390 stainless steel, which is popular with top knife makers. Typical Kombo design.
The Böhler M390 comes from the Böhler Edelstahl GmbH & Co KG factory in Kapfenberg, Austria. This manufacturer produces types of steel that are incredibly resistant to wear. So-called 'special steels' which have been developed for ball bearings or parts in jet engines. The same applies to the Böhler M390.
Of course, there are other manufacturers who have mastered this process. Take for example the Crucible using the CPM method or Carpenter calling it Micro Melt.
Although Böhler M390 is one of the most popular and efficient grades of steel on the market, it was developed by Böhler for use in molds for the injection molding industry. When you look at Böhler's data sheet, you can still see it listed as the primary purpose. The fact that it is also great for use in knives is considered an alternative purpose.
For these molds, the steel must also be extremely wear-resistant. If you want to be able to take the same shape from the same mold approx. 10,000 times should not wear out during casting for the first time or 10,000 times. That's why these molds are made from premium grades of steel.
Why is the Böhler M390 so popular?
The short answer to this question is: staying sharp. M390 is so wear-resistant that it perfectly maintains the shape of the edge. Therefore, such a knife made of M390 steel will retain its sharpness for a very long time. This means you don't have to sharpen the knife as often.
M390 is manufactured using a powder metallurgy process. The result of such a process is that the structure at the molecular level becomes much finer.
In addition to maintaining sharpness, the M390 has a few other good features. It can be hardened to a relatively high hardness without breaking quickly. This means that M390 can be slightly thinner compared to other types of steel.
