AMBU2: Backup 2 Hawkbill by Al Mar Knives
The Backup models are smaller lighter fixed blades designed for all-day, everyday carry. They offer you exactly what their name tells you: they are backup for anything your day may bring. Available in 3" Model 2, Hawkbill, the Al Mar Backups are designed by ABS Mastersmith Kirk Rexroat.
Al Mar was born in the U.S.A., the son of Chinese immigrants. He served in a Special Forces Reserve Unit and volunteered to serve in a Green Beret special operations group in Vietnam. After serving in Vietnam, Al completed his college education by earning a master’s degree in industrial design from the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles.
He went on to work at Gerber® Legendary Blades under Pete Gerber, concluding his tenure there as “Head of Knife Design.”
In 1979, Al founded AL MAR® Knives. His mission was to blend mass production methods with custom knife quality. At first, most of his knives were designed for police and military because of his vast experiences as a practitioner of Judo and Kendo and his history as a Green Beret. Al’s SERE® (Survival-Evasion-Resistance-Escape) knife was the very first knife accepted for use by Special Forces Colonel Nick Rowe for the SERE Instructor School at Camp Mackall North Carolina. The same Nick Rowe is well known for his bravery in Vietnam, and as the author of the book “Five Years To Freedom: The True Story of a Vietnam POW” and the namesake for the “Nasty Nick,” the most difficult obstacle course in the U.S. Army. And as the company grew, his designs evolved to include high-quality hunting/fishing, kitchen, and gentlemen’s gift knives.
Al Mar was a life member of the Special Forces Association, a member of the Special Operations Association, and a reserve deputy sheriff. He was inducted into both the Fighting Knives Magazine and Blade Magazine Hall of Fame. Al Mar was a man worthy of the highest respect.
Al Mar started in the cutlery industry in 1968 in the employ of f Pete Gerber at Gerber Legendary Blades. Mar designed knives for Gerber until 1977 and, in 1978, founded Al Mar Knives. Since 1979, AL MAR Knives™ has been committed to making unique designs at quality levels that rival custom, hand-made knives. Today, each knife crafted by AL MAR is hand-finished and hand-sharpened by craftsmen dedicated to creating the very best possible. Each AL MAR knife features flat-ground blades for strength and superior performance – and that’s just one reason to trust the AL MAR name. Inducted into the Blade Magazine Cutlery Hall of Fame in 2009. Al passed away in 1992.
Kirk Rexroat, Master Bladesmith Designer
I was born and raised in Wyoming and began my knifemaking This Rexroat Designed fixed blade features an AUS8 satin finished hawkbill blade, notched thumbrest, 1/8" blade stock and 7/8" blade depth. The handle has black linen micarta scales. Comes with original black leather sheath. My career in 1980, starting with stock removal knives, then in 1991 I began forging and it has become my passion. I am a member of the American Blade-smith Society and I received my Journeyman stamp in 1997 and my Mastersmith stamp in 1999. From grinding to heat treating to the final buffing, I do it all in my shop. Like the Wyoming weather, the styles and designs of my knives are always changing. I believe a knife must feel good in your hand and hold an edge well. These two principles are paramount to any knife and I have incorporated these two attributes into all the knives I make. My strongest points as a knife maker include the large variety of knife styles that I make, the clean lines and the excellent fit and finish.
